Building a searchable global healthcare directory in WordPress

A searchable healthcare provider directory built with Gutenberg, custom blocks, Google Maps and an importer that turns Excel data into WordPress content.

WordPress development & custom functionality

Starting point

Voyageur wanted to create a standalone listing directory for International Hospitals & Healthcare, covering healthcare organisations across different regions and specialisms.

It also needed to be realistic for their internal team to manage. With potentially large numbers of listings, manually creating every provider page one at a time was going to become time consuming very quickly.

What I Built

Working from designs created by Voyageur design team, I translated the Figma file into a custom WordPress theme built in the block editor.

I built custom Gutenberg blocks and reusable patterns for the main site components, along with structured provider listings that can be searched and browsed by region and category. Google Maps is integrated into the directory to help visitors understand where providers are located.

I also developed a custom importer that takes structured Excel data and converts it into the required WordPress blocks, allowing large numbers of listings to be imported consistently without rebuilding each entry manually.

Outcome

The result is a directory that’s quite sophisticated on the front end but still works within a familiar WordPress editing setup behind the scenes.

The importer is probably my favourite part because it removes a lot of repetitive work and makes the site much more practical as the directory grows.
